On May 24-25 in St. Petersburg on the basis of Petersburg Tram Mechanical Factory OJSC and NIIEFA-ENERGO Ltd. was held a joint scientific-technical conference of the International Association of urban electric transport’s enterprises (MAP GET) and the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) on "New power supply technologies and equipment for urban electric transport operators. Trends in the development of light rail transport in Russia and the CIS". It was the first experience of joint activities of the two leading - the global and Russian - public organizations, uniting in its ranks as specialists and public figures, for whom urban electric transport is a very important component of modern public transport throughout the world.

About 120 representatives of rolling stock’s operators and manufactures, executives and specialists of UITP, from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland and Estonia took part in the conference.

The reports were generally focused on the problems of development prospects of light rail systems in cities of Russia, as such systems having important ecological, innovative and strategic significance nowadays. In the world among all types of urban passenger transport (considering comprehensive quality assessment), light rail transport is declared as the most perspective. Currently it is being actively developed in the world, including Europe.

Also, the conference participants visited Petersburg Tram-Mechanical Factory OJSC, where they got acquainted with the production of trams for the system Metrotram in Volgograd, which relates to LRT systems.
